Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, or RPI for short, is a private research university located in Troy, which is a city in the US state of New York, serving as the county seat of Rensselaer County, with a population approximated at a number of more than 49 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census estimate.
RPI was established in 1824 and was founded by Stephen Van Rensselaer for the `application of science to the common purposes of life`, being the oldest technological university in the English-speaking world. It offers its students more than 145 programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, through 5 schools - Engineering, Science, Architecture, Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and the Lally School of Management & Technology, also offering an interdisciplinary degree in Information Technology.
RPI's athletic teams are known as the Engineers and they compete in NCAA Division III, in the Liberty League, in 21 sports, for both men and women. Their distinctive colors are cherry and white, and their mascots are Puckman and The Redhawk.
